Sleep, Memory Consolidation, and Semantic Relationships in a Verbal Declarative Memory Task
نویسندگان
چکیده
It remains unclear, but critically important, to determine whether sleep influences the consolidation of declarative memories. Although several recent studies suggest a beneficial role of sleep in the consolidation of verbal declarative memories, these studies have typically used a “split-night” procedure, where memory for word pairs was tested after 3 hours of early sleep, or after 3 hours of late sleep (e.g. Plihal and Born, 1997, although see Ellenbogen et al., in press). In this study, we used English translations of Gais and Born’s (2004) wordpairs, and compared performance on these original, semantically related word-pairs to performance on a matched list of unrelated word-pairs after a 12-hour period containing either sleep or wake.

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Word Pairs Task for Declarative Memory Assessment
Objective: According to the declarative/procedural model, the semantic aspect of language depends on the brain structures responsible for declarative memory. The word pairs task is a common tool for evaluating declarative memory. The current study aimed to design a valid and reliable task for evaluating declarative memory in Persian children at learning and retention stages and to investigate i...
متن کاملThe role of sleep on children's motor memory consolidation in a motor sequence task
Sleep has been shown to affect the consolidation of motor memory in adults. However, sleep-dependent consolidation is not well-specified in children as like as adults. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of sleep on childrenchr('39')s motor memory consolidation. The participants were 32 voluntary boys aging from 10 to 12 years old from city of Kerman, which had the necess...
متن کاملImpaired memory consolidation during sleep in patients with functional memory disorder.
Functional memory disorder (FMD) is characterized by mnestic and attentional deficits without symptoms of mild cognitive impairment or dementia. FMD usually develops in subjects with high psychosocial stress level and is classified to the somatoform disorders. We assessed memory performance (procedural mirror tracing task, declarative visual and verbal memory task) and other cognitive functions...
متن کاملImpaired sleep-related consolidation of declarative memories in idiopathic focal epilepsies of childhood.
OBJECTIVE Declarative memory is consolidated during sleep in healthy children. We tested the hypothesis that consolidation processes are impaired in idiopathic focal epilepsies (IFE) of childhood in association with frequent interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) during sleep. METHODS A verbal (word-pair association) and a nonverbal (2D object location) declarative memory task were adminis...
متن کاملSleep-Related Declarative Memory Consolidation and Verbal Replay during Sleep Talking in Patients with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder
OBJECTIVE To determine if sleep talkers with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) would utter during REM sleep sentences learned before sleep, and to evaluate their verbal memory consolidation during sleep. METHODS Eighteen patients with RBD and 10 controls performed two verbal memory tasks (16 words from the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test and a 220-263 word long modified Story Recall Te...
